Chris's Story

Chris' Story

After suffering a disabling stroke in 2008, Chris spent 14 months trapped in his home. Unable to use his right side he lost all confidence, having to depend on his wife to take him out and even help him move around in the house. They had to use a manual wheelchair, which was difficult for his wife to push and manoeuvre.

After receiving a Powered DMA Mini 4 Scooter from the Wheelchair Fund, Chris has found renewed independence by being able to venture outside. The scooter is small and mobile and his wife can lift it in and out of their car.

Chris says: “Before receiving my scooter, I had lost all my confidence and had to rely on my wife to take me out, now I am out as much as I can. I am able to go to the paper shop, attend the stroke group and do shopping at Asda all on my own. It has lifted my spirit and given me my independence back. It has freed up time for my wife and now I can take my children to school and back.”

Previously keen on fishing Chris can now use his scooter to get around a local pond often being accompanied by his children on their bicycles.

He now goes out as much as he can and has found that he has become more confident with his new found independence.
