About Us

The Wheelchair Fund was formed in 1980 by Mrs Doreen Taylor to assist disabled children in and around the town of Wigan by providing them with powered kerb-climbing wheelchairs in order for them to be as mobile as possible.

Neil Mahoney was the first youngster to receive a wheelchair from funds raised by Doreen and friends. John Martin from the Riverside Club arranged a concert in 1980, which was held at Goose Green Labour Club, £700 was raised.

From this initial venture ‘The Wheelchair Fund’ was formed. Initially the chairs were for children, but over the years we have been able to provide chairs and equipment for people of all ages.

The Wheelchair Fund has been involved in fund raising activities ever since the first fund raising concert was held. Today, we are still involved in fund raising activities.

Our charity shop ‘The Wheelchair Fund’ – 50-52 St Paul's Avenue, Worsley Mesnes, Wigan. The shop is staffed by a dedicated core of unpaid individuals, who offer un-stinted support for our cause on a purely volunteer basis.

We also receive a great deal of support from Wigan borough groups and other bands of supporters; who after having benefited from the charity themselves, offer their time and energy on an annual basis to raise money for our cause. To these people we are extremely grateful.

Over the years, The Wheelchair Fund has supplied not only wheelchairs for children and adults around the borough, but much needed supplies and equipment for local schools and families.
